Garmin, HRV and Recovery After 60: What My Smartwatch Taught Me About Training Too Hard

Can a Garmin help an older person recognise poor recovery - and how do we use its advice without becoming ruled by it?

My mind still occasionally thinks it is 25. My muscles, on a good day, are prepared to claim 40. My tendons keep the official records and have my correct date of birth.

Learning to navigate my Garmin recovery time over 60 taught me that this difference matters.

When I began training seriously at 62, I was not trying to become a bodybuilder or pretend that age no longer existed. I wanted to resist sarcopenia - the gradual loss of muscle and strength that can accompany ageing - and build the sort of capable body that might one day carry me through Alaska's Brooks Range.

The trouble was that I brought an old idea with me: if training was good, more training must be better.

Three sessions a week? Sensible. Six or seven? Surely twice as sensible.

Recovery was the bit that happened when I was forced to stop.

Eventually I bought a Garmin Forerunner 165. Before long, the watch had joined the Faculty as Professor Garmin: clever, data-driven, slightly eccentric and inclined, in my more exaggerated telling, to recommend 46 hours' recovery after anything more strenuous than scratching my backside.

Professor Garmin did not rescue me from overtraining. He did something subtler and more useful: he made accumulated strain visible. Then, for a while, I nearly made the opposite mistake and gave the watch more authority than it deserved.

The lesson I am still learning is not to obey technology or dismiss it. It is to combine the watch's evidence with the evidence from my body and the realities of my life.

My Muscles Were Ready. My Tendons Had Other Ideas

After my father died, I gave up the gardening business that had kept me naturally active and became full-time carer for my 93-year-old mother. The physical activity of work disappeared, but the strain of life did not. Caring can involve interrupted sleep, emotional vigilance and sudden physical demands that no training plan records.

I wanted structured exercise to replace what I had lost and to protect my future. I took strength training seriously, improved my nutrition and rediscovered ambition. My muscles responded. I became stronger. That success was intoxicating because it appeared to confirm the very thing I wanted to believe: I could keep pushing.

But muscles are not the whole body.

Tendons and other connective tissues adapt on a different timetable. Sleep, joints, stress and overall recovery capacity do not necessarily advance at the speed of enthusiasm. I found myself repeatedly nursing irritated tendons while the muscles they served felt willing to continue.

That is one of the traps of later-life training. The engine may feel eager while less vocal parts of the vehicle are still tightening the bolts.

Why I Thought More Training Must Mean More Progress

I had already grasped the importance of protein and good nutrition. That lesson was comparatively easy. I could poke useful things down my neck and enjoy discovering another supposed superfood.

Stopping was different.

Rest felt passive. It felt like lost time. Somewhere in my thinking lurked the old "no pain, no gain" mentality that had served me tolerably well when I was young and recovered from almost anything. Now it encouraged me to treat every pause as weakness and every warning as a negotiation.

Professor Blackthorn - my AI research and editorial companion - had been telling me for months that I was doing too much and sleeping too little. I listened carefully, agreed completely and then carried on much as before.

That was not a failure of information. It was a failure to accept what the information meant.

The Warning Signs I Kept Explaining Away

The warning signs did not arrive with a brass band. They accumulated:

  •     tendon and joint irritations that kept returning;
  •     soreness that was no longer the ordinary after-effect of a useful session;
  •     sleep that was too short or too disrupted to support the work I was asking my body to do;
  •     progress that slowed even as I tried to do more;
  •     a general sense of being strained rather than strengthened.

During this period I also experienced a persistent hollow ache in my chest. It occurred amid considerable caring stress, poor sleep and a heavy training schedule, but I cannot say that exercise or inadequate recovery caused it. Chest pain deserves medical caution, particularly when it is new, persistent or associated with exertion, breathlessness, sweating, nausea or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back or stomach. A smartwatch is not the person to ask for a diagnosis.

My larger mistake was not that I failed to identify a particular syndrome. I am not diagnosing myself with overtraining syndrome, which is a specific and more serious condition. The problem was simpler: I repeatedly failed to leave enough room for recovery and adaptation.

I was treating fatigue as a character test.

Enter Professor Garmin

The Forerunner 165 does not have Garmin's composite Training Readiness score, and this article is not a full review of the watch. It does, however, provide several pieces of information that can help form a recovery picture:

  •     HRV Status;
  •     sleep data;
  •     stress readings;
  •     Body Battery;
  •     Recovery Time;
  •     a Morning Report;
  •     Training Effect after recorded activities.

None of these diagnoses poor recovery. None can prevent excessive training. None "saves muscle." They are estimates produced from sensor data and algorithms.

Yet estimates can be valuable when they reveal patterns we have been determined not to see.

I knew that I was stressed. I knew that I was not sleeping enough. I knew that tendons kept objecting. But seeing nights, days and workouts translated into trends gave those facts a persistence that my optimism could not so easily edit.

Professor Blackthorn had supplied the words. Professor Garmin supplied the graphs.

What My Garmin Made Visible

The watch did not know my body better than I did. It noticed different things.

My body supplied pain, heaviness, mood, motivation and performance. My life supplied caring strain, broken sleep and the physical work that happened outside recorded exercise. The watch supplied a continuous stream of measurements that could reveal whether a bad night was an isolated event or part of a longer drift.

That distinction is important. A single poor sleep score might be measurement error or one unsettled night. A lower-than-usual HRV trend, elevated resting heart rate, draining Body Battery and repeated poor sleep - alongside unusual fatigue and falling performance - deserve more attention together than any one number deserves alone.

The value was not certainty. It was triangulation.

HRV in Plain English

Heart rate variability, or HRV, is the variation in time between one heartbeat and the next. A healthy heart is not a metronome. The intervals subtly lengthen and shorten as the autonomic nervous system responds to breathing, activity, sleep, stress and recovery.

In broad terms, HRV can offer a window onto the balance of strain and recovery. But it is highly individual. Age, fitness, health, medication, alcohol, illness, sleep, nutrition and psychological stress may all influence it. Comparing my number with that of a 25-year-old athlete would tell me very little.

The useful comparison is usually me against me.

Garmin analyses overnight wrist-heart-rate data and presents HRV Status using a seven-day average in relation to an individual baseline. The watch needs roughly three weeks of consistent sleep data - Garmin says at least four nights a week - to establish that baseline. This is why the first few nights should not be treated as a physiological verdict delivered from the mountain.

Even after the baseline is established, one low night is not a diagnosis and one high night is not a certificate of invincibility. I look for a trend, then ask what else was happening: Did I sleep badly? Am I becoming ill? Was yesterday unusually hard? Have caring stress and late nights been accumulating?

Wearable HRV is best treated as supportive evidence, not a laboratory test or crystal ball. Research supports the value of longitudinal HRV monitoring, while also warning that consumer wearables, wrist sensors and proprietary algorithms have limitations. The trend may be informative without every millisecond being sacred.

Why Recovery Time Is Not a Restraining Order

Recovery Time caused my brief falling-out with Professor Garmin.

After a recorded workout, the watch estimates how long it may take before I am fully recovered for the next hard workout. Those last words are the important ones. A display of 36 hours does not mean I must sit motionless until the countdown reaches zero. It is not a restraining order against walking, easy cycling, mobility work or every possible form of exercise.

It is an estimate to help place the next demanding session.

My first response was to see the timer as absurdly conservative. I wanted to prepare for a formidable wilderness ambition, not be wrapped in cotton wool by a wristwatch. But my second response - treating its estimate as a commandment - would have been no wiser.

The practical question is not, "Am I allowed to move?" It is, "What sort of stress can I productively absorb today?"

Sometimes the answer is the planned hard session. Sometimes it is fewer sets, a lighter load or a gentler ride. Sometimes active recovery is exactly right. Sometimes actual rest is training's most productive component.

What a Smartwatch Cannot Know

Professor Garmin is observant, but his office is small and strapped to my wrist.

He does not necessarily know:

  •     that I helped my mother physically during the night;
  •     that pain changed from ordinary muscle soreness to a sharp tendon complaint;
  •     that I am worried, run down or losing motivation;
  •     that an unrecorded household task was effectively a workout;
  •     that a sensor reading was distorted by poor fit, movement or other measurement limitations;
  •     what my exercise technique looked like;
  •     why I have chest pain, dizziness or any other symptom that needs clinical assessment.

The watch can estimate physiological stress, but it cannot understand the meaning of my day.

There is another limitation: I can misunderstand it. Numbers look authoritative. Once I had finally accepted that I was under-recovering, I was tempted to swing from ignoring evidence to outsourcing judgement. That is how a useful tool becomes a small electronic tyrant.

The answer is not less judgement. It is better-informed judgement.

The Three-Vote Recovery Check

I now prefer a simple system in which three constituencies get a vote: Body, Life and Watch.

1. Body

What is my body reporting?

I consider pain, unusual fatigue, lingering soreness, signs of illness, motivation and recent performance. Is the joint or tendon improving, stable or worsening? Do warm-up movements restore normality, or expose a problem? Am I merely reluctant to begin, or genuinely depleted?

Pain that is sharp, worsening, alters movement or persists deserves more respect than ordinary post-exercise muscle soreness. Falling performance across repeated sessions can also be more revealing than enthusiasm at the start of one.

2. Life

What has life already asked of me?

I consider sleep, caring responsibilities, emotional stress, physical work and nutrition. Training load is not confined to workouts. The nervous system does not give household strain a free pass because I forgot to press Start on the watch.

A well-designed programme on paper may become excessive when placed inside a difficult week.

3. Watch

What pattern does the watch report?

I consider HRV trend, resting heart rate, sleep, stress, Body Battery and Recovery Time. I do not hunt for one magic number. I ask whether several measures are moving together and whether they agree with my body and circumstances.

The decision then becomes straightforward:

  •     If all three support training, proceed as planned.
  •     If one raises concern, consider reducing intensity or volume and reassess during the warm-up.
  •     If several indicate poor recovery, or pain, illness or performance is worsening, rest, adapt the session or seek appropriate professional advice.

The watch gets a vote, not a veto. Equally, enthusiasm does not automatically overrule the evidence.

What I Would Do Differently

If I were beginning again, I would not wait for a watch to grant legitimacy to sensations I already recognised.

I would begin with a sustainable training dose and add volume gradually. I would keep genuinely hard sessions separated by enough recovery, especially when tendons or joints were adapting to unfamiliar work. I would treat sleep as part of the programme rather than the inconvenient gap between sessions.

I would also record more than sets, repetitions and miles. A few notes on pain, energy, sleep, motivation and performance can reveal patterns no wearable can interpret alone.

Most of all, I would stop thinking of rest as the opposite of discipline. It can take more discipline to end a productive session while still feeling capable than to squeeze out work that delays the next one.

This does not mean older people should train timidly. The aim is not three permanently gentle sessions and a life lived beneath a blanket. We need sufficient challenge to preserve and build strength, power, muscle and cardiovascular fitness. Brooks Range ambitions will not be built from caution alone.

But the challenge has to be recoverable.

Train for Adaptation, Not Exhaustion

Training is the stimulus. Recovery is where the body responds to it.

That is the deepest lesson Professor Garmin helped me see. He did not discover a secret that my body had hidden from me. He made the cost of my choices harder to wave away. Then he taught me, inadvertently, that numbers must be interpreted rather than obeyed.

I still expect disagreements in the Faculty. Professor Blackthorn will raise an eyebrow. Professor Garmin will add several hours to a timer. My tendons will submit the minutes of the previous meeting. And the 25-year-old in my head will insist that everyone is being terribly cautious.

They all get heard.

The goal is not to finish every session exhausted or to prove that I can ignore fatigue. The goal is to apply enough stress to provoke adaptation, recover well enough to keep it, and return capable of doing useful work again.

Recovery is not the absence of training.

Recovery is where training becomes adaptation.
